Mystery shopping is a new side hustle that I have only just recently started trying for myself. If you are looking at how to become a secret shopper then hopefully this post will give you some answers to your questions.
There are loads of companies out there that need regular people like you and me to visit shops, restaurants and any other kind of business you can think of and then give feedback on our experience.
This then gives the companies valuable information with which they can improve and modify their services. This ensures that their business is of the highest standard.
So what’s in it for me? Good question, well firstly you will usually get paid or reimbursed for any expenditure. You can also sometimes receive free goods such as perhaps a free meal or coffee and sometimes even free travel.
On other occasions, you may be asked to get repairs to your car or make a phone call or email to a particular company. You will ask about some service you require just to see how they receive and act to calls and emails. Usually, you will get this service for free or be reimbursed for any money you had to spend.
All of this data is then used by the company in order to improve their services. Plus you get paid so its good for all involved, not to mention at times being a secret shopper or mystery shopper is a bit like being a spy. Well, minus the dark glasses and newspaper to hide behind.
How To Become A Secret Shopper
There are several websites you can sign up to in order to apply to become a secret shopper/mystery shopper. The signup process for some of these sites is a little longer than signing up to most websites. They have to make sure you can follow simple instructions. This means there are a few little tasks to complete upon signing up.
When you have added your name, date of birth and email address, some of these companies will make sure that you have a decent grasp of spelling and grammar by giving you some basic sentences to read and choose the correct one without any mistakes. You dont have to get this right on the first attempt so dont get spooked by this. It is really easy
I will provide a list of the trusted websites I use below but I would advise doing your homework on some of the sites as there are some scammers out there as there is in all forms of websites that will try and gain your personal information, so make sure the site you are visiting is a legitimate mystery shopper site.
No legitimate secret shopper site will ask for money in advance either. Remember you are the one doing the tasks so you are the one getting paid not the other way around. Visit https://www.mspa-ea.org/ to make sure that the site your visiting is a legitimate mystery shopper site.
How Much Can I Earn?
Well, that depends on how many job opportunities there are on that particular site. It pays to be registered with more than one mystery shopping site. This gives you the best chance of getting good paying tasks.
Also, most sites have a distance you are willing to travel section and I would make this a nice wide scope. Obviously, you are not going to travel 40 miles to test a coffee and be reimbursed the price of the coffee plus £3 for your trouble, but you will soon see that when you spread that net wider you can capture a lot more jobs.
If you try and work some of the tasks around areas where you may be traveling to this will help reduce costs and keep you active in terms of completing jobs.
So how much can you earn? Well, there have been reports of people doing this as a full-time job. IE: earning anywhere between £15-30,000 per year but because of the growth in popularity of mystery shopping it is unlikely you will reach that amount unless of course you have been doing it for a few years and have gained a reputation for completing your tasks on time and efficiently.
Once you get used to completing tasks and giving reports etc it is quite feasible to make a couple of hundred pounds per month for doing 2-3 tasks per week. It really does depend on you and how much time you have available.
Mystery Shopping Sites
MSL: Mystery Shoppers Limited
This is the first site I signed up to at the start. Having used it for a few weeks I found the site to be really clear to use and easy to navigate.
There seemed to be a good variety of jobs and what was better was there seemed to be a good deal of them and especially around the area I had set as my preferred working area.

MarketForce I have also signed up for. This is one of the most popular sites in the UK for mystery shopping. They have a superb range of various jobs available and the website was easy to navigate.
The first job I came across was to go bowling and have food and drink. The payment was £10 plus up to £25 reimbursement for the bowling and food etc. Great if you wanted a free afternoon of bowling.
As with the first site on my list they now have a mobile app so you can pick up jobs close to where you are at any time. Perfect for busy people out and about.

Mystery Dining By HGEM
This one is one of my favorites. Who doesn’t enjoy eating out? especially when the meal is free or heavily reimbursed? This site is best to sign up to if you live in or near a big city. Fortunately, I do so there is plenty of choices when it comes to picking tasks.
The majority do sometimes appear to be pubs and pub/restaurants but there are a few gems on there and the more reputable you become the better jobs will come your way.
The sign-up process is more lengthy than some and there is the chance you may not get accepted as they are looking for specific people. Make sure you have the time to do the sign-up process so you can give it your best shot.

Retail Maxim is perfect if you love to shop until you drop. There is, of course, one small issue with this and that is that the jobs to tend to be only available for a few minutes before eager mystery shoppers snap them up and you have missed out.
So if you are content to check every hour or two for new jobs and fight the other mystery shoppers for the best tasks out there then this may just be the site for you. The money is good and travel expenses are offered as well so it’s a good one to sign up to.

Nice and easy name to remember eh? This is a big site with lots of good feedback. It also now has android and IOS apps on the store and pays well. Again like most of the secret shopper sites you sign up to there will be an initial process you have to go through but this is just to make sure you are able to fulfill the tasks that they may set you.

So these are some of the sites that I have used and there are plenty more out there for you to peruse through and see what fits you the best. You can sign up to all of them if you wish. You will get inundated with emails but this will lead to a lot of tasks to pick from.
Let me know how you get on and what great freebies you receive.
